Imphal, February 01, 2006: The people of Thanlon and Parbung sub-divisions have expressed sincere gratitude and extended traditional welcome to GOC of 57 Mountain Division, major general GG Dwivedi today.
A PIB (D/W) statement informed that these areas were cleared of UGs after nine years with the successful completion of Operation Dragnet recently.
The village chiefs noted to the GOC that more than 200 villagers have started returning to their homes as peace has been restored in these areas, it mentioned.
Moreover a memorandum highlighting the hardships and apprehensions of the villagers was also submitted to the GOC.
They requested for permanent posting of Army in the area to which the GOC assured of their presence in the area till normalcy is restored.
The GOC further remarked that civil administration would soon take up their offices in both the sub-divisional HQs.
Development projects like improvement of NH-150, renovation of schools and PHC buildings, restoration of electricity and water supply are all in the offing, he added.
Informing that operations to sanitise the area off IEDs is continuing with the neutralisation of 64 IEDs so far, the GOC disclosed that the Army would undertake projects to improve the living conditions of the people as first priority.
The statement added that cultural programmes were presented on the occasion after which the general provided monetary assistance for development activities in these areas.
