MZP collects donations for Hmar refugees

Aizawl, February 02, 2006: The state’s largest students’ body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, yesterday and today raised donations for Manipur’s Hmars who fled to Mizoram in fear of Manipuri underground UNLF militants.

The donations collected from several shopowners in the city amounted to 12 bags of rice, 12 bags of clothes, 112 pairs of shoes, 105 litres of K oil, 2 bags of iodised salt, 5 bags of potato, 5 bags of dal and a large quantity of medicines, MZP sources said. The donations also included Rs 30,000 in cash.

“We thank all the donors for their generosity. This shows our love towards our ethnic brethren Hmars,” MZP president PC Laltlansanga said. More donations can be given at the MZP office here.

The donated alms would be transported to the refugee camp in Sakawrdai at the earliest possible time. The transportation would be provided by chief secretary Haukhum Hauzel, the MZP said.

The MZP said it has sent a letter to the Manipur chief minister requesting him to take immediate measures for the safe return of the Hmar refugees to their respective villages.

Meanwhile, the Hmar Students’ Association, Aizawl joint headquarters, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sakawrdai, Khawpuar and Vaitin villages for giving immediate shelter to the refugees, to Mizoram government for its hospitality and construction of a refugee camp and all the people who have generously donated for the refugees.
