Imphal, February 09, 2006: Despite the claims of Lt Gen ZU Shah, 3 Corps Commander and GOC of 57 Mountain Division Major Gen GG Dwivedi that Parbung and Thanlon have been cleared of militants, reports have come in that a fierce gun fight is on between MPA cadres of the UNLF and the security personnel at S Lailong village, which is about a 5 hour walk distance from Thanlon sub-division headquarters.
A spokesman of the UNLF informed the press that fighting broke out between the MPA cadres and the security personnel at 5.30 am today and added that it is still raging.
Till the time of filing this report late in the evening, the gun fight is reported to be raging.
There is no casualty on the side of the MPA cadres, added the spokesman.
Earlier on February 7 a fierce gun fight ensued between MPA cadres and security personnel at Noupanlon village in Henglep sub-division further informed the spokesman.
The fighting which erupted at 5 pm on the said day claimed the lives of two security personnel while one MPA was killed, admitted the spokesman. The arms used by the slain cadre was however retrieved by his comrades.
Hurt jawan succumbs : The 15 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry rifleman who suffered bomb splinter wounds when suspected underground activists set off an explosive device at Ningthoukhong yesterday night failed to reciprocate to medical attention.
The victim jawan is identified as Bijoykumar and is informed to have passed away at Leimakhong Army Hospital.
Mention may be made that another person also hurt in thesame blast is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS Hospital.
Informed to be a rickshaw puller the injured person is named as one Heisnam Sachimohan (27) of Toupokpi.
