Sidhu visits Lungthulien

Imphal, March 10, 2006: As part of the ongoing visits to the hill areas of the State, Governor Dr SS Sidhu today visited Thanlon, Parbung, Jiribam as well as Lungthulien where a raging controversy is on over the alleged rape of Hmar women by cadres of an underground outfit. In a statement, the Governor’s Secretariat said that the Governor met relatives of the victims of land mine at Parbung as well as the alleged atrocities committed at Lungthulien by militants.

The Governor handed over some token relief to the villagers, said the statement and added that the villagers were informed that FIRs have been registered in connection with the alleged atrocities and assured them that if needed a more detailed inquiry may be considered for constitution.

The Governor further assured that necessary and sufficient relief to the victims and their families will be provided by the State at the earliest.

The GOC of 57 Mountain Division also informed that about 100 land mines may have been cleared so far, added the statement.

At Jiribam the Governor was briefed by the Chief Engineer, Project Sewak about the improvement work undertaken on NH-53 and Engineers from the Railways informed about the progress of the survey work undertaken on the rail line targeted for completion by March 2011.

At Thanlon and Parbung the Governor was apprised about the prevailing situation on various fronts, including lack of food grain, poor communication facility, lack of medical facility, atrocities committed by militants, etc, said the statement. The Governor opined that an ADC office ought to be opened at Thanlon and Parbung and added that work on NH-150 will be taken up very soon. The stretch between Thanlon and CCpur will also made motorable by the end of this year.
