Aizawl, March 27, 2006: Mani Charanamei, Lok Sabha MP of Outer Manipur has expressed his gratitutde for the works done by the Mizoram Government for the Hmar refugees from Manipur who are presently camped at Sakawrdai Relief Camps in Mizoram.

“We deeply appreciated the moral and material support rendered by the Mizoram Government for the relief and rehabilitation of the Hmar refugees,” Mani Charanamei said.

The MP, who has to travel 8 hours from Aizawl to reach Lungthulien and Parbung village in Tipaimukh area in Manipur said that the region was virtually without any Governmental set up. “There was no administrative set up in the region, no active schools, no Government offices, nothing at all. It is totally neglected, totally cut of, not a single Government installation, I will raise the issue with the Chief Minister Ibobi Singh and the state’s Governor,” he said.

So far the Mizoram Government has doled out Rs. 13.5 lakhs for the relief and rehabilitation of the refugees according to Lalrinchhanna, Mizoram Relief & Rehab. minister. “On the contrary the Manipuri Government has spent only Rs. 1.37 lakhs for their purpose, this is serious,” the MP said.

Due to the impossible road journey in Manipur side to reach Lungthulian and Purbung village the MP has to take to the region via Aizawl in Mizoram.

“The situation there is under control, with more armies deployed in the region the militants have already fled, but the present solution to the militants’ threat is still a question. They might return as soon as the armies leave the place, there has to be a permanent solution, I will met the Chief minister and the Governor to put up a police station-ah Lungthulian village, the refugees also knew that it is safe now, but the question is for how long,” the MP ask.

The MP also said the Inquiry Commission should be based in Churachandpur and not Imphal. “Since the top NGOs of Churachandpur district has demanded the Commission to be based in Churachandpur I will take the matter with the Governor,” he said.

The MP also said he would raise the matter at the Union Home ministry so that a permanent army installation could be set up in the region.
