Imphal, March 21, 2006: The Justice SP Rajkhowa Inquiry Commission has issued public notices for it to go ahead with the investigation into the allegations of sexual molestation of M Naobi Chanu while in the custody of Thoubal police commandos as well as the mass rape of Hmar women by underground cadres at Churachandpur on January 16 this year. Imphal, March 21, 2006: Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh has decided to visit Thanlon and Parbung in Churachandpur district on March 28. He will meet residents of the area from where tribal villagers fled to Mizoram recently following depredations by armed outfits.
Ibobi Singh’s planned visit comes in the wake of an uproar in the district after militants allegedly raped 21 women at Parbung and nearby Lungthulien village in January. More »
Imphal, March 21, 2006: Reacting to the State Government’s decision to institute a Judicial Inquiry to ascertain the veracity of the allegations of mass rape of Hmar girls by cadres of the UNLF and KCP at Lungtholien, the Hmar Students’ Association (general headquarters) desired the direct involvement of National Human Rights Commission or National Commission for Women in the matter. Imphal, March 21, 2006: The All Tribal Students’ Union, Manipur (ATSUM) has asserted that the facts about the “mass rape” case of Churachandpur district had already been exposed by NGOs in the newspapers including in the North East Sun magazine and “so there is no need to form a fact finding team by any element.” ATSUM members while talking to Newmai News Network said that the facts about the “mass rape” case of 21 Hmar girls by the UNLF cadres had already been made public by NGOs. Shillong, March 20, 2006: President of the All Tribals Students’ Union Manipur, Dr John Pulamte on Monday condemned the alleged rape of more than 21 Hmar women, including minors as young as 13, by Manipur valley based militants, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and the Kangleipak Communist Party, at Tipaimukh Subdivision under Churachandpur district, which is dominated by Hmar tribe. Imphal, March 19, 2006: The efforts and concerns of Threatened Indigenous Peoples’ Society (TIPS) to form a fact finding team and the appeal to all civil societies/organizations to attend a meeting for the formation of the team to probe the gang rape committed by the UNLF cadres at Thangthulian village, Tipaimukh subdivision, Churachandpur district on March 25 at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal is appreciable, however the concern at hand have been testified by the rape victims and the eye witnesses through the press interview in the North-east Sun Magazine, said a joint statement issued by All Naga students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), and Naga Women’s Union, Manipur (NWUM).
