Churachandpur, March 08, 2006: Less than a week after the uproar over the alleged molestation of a woman from Thoubal in police custody, surcharged Manipur found a new cause celebre in allegations about mass rapes by militants in Churachandpur district at the beginning of the year. Thousands today hit the streets of Churachandpur to protest the alleged rape of 21 girls by members of the militant United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in three villages of Tipaimukh subdivision. Imphal, March 08, 2006: After minutely and thoroughly discussing the allegations of mass rape of a number of women, including minors, by cadres of an underground organisation at Thanlon and Tipaimukh sub-divisions, the State Assembly today decided to inquire into the matter.

Imphal, March 07, 2006: Further ratcheting up the charges of rape and other atrocities by cadres of the UNLF and the KCP in the Tipaimukh area of Churachandpur district, the Sinlung Indigenous People’s Human Rights Organisation has submitted a memorandum to the Union home minister, Shivraj Patel, seeking his immediate intervention for restoration of law and order in the area, and for relief and rehabilitation of the victims. Imphal, March 07, 2006: The Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has expressed its deep concern over the allegation of repeated offences of sexual abuses amounting to rape of 21 young Hmar girls from November last year till February 2006 in Churachandpur district’s Thanlon and Tipaimukh sub divisions, raised by the All Women’s Association of Churachandpur District, asserting that if true, these constitute a war crime and therefore a crime against human society and humanity.
