Imphal, April 5, 2006: The Delhi units of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl, Hmar Student’s Association, Khangthh Zuun Pawl, Paite Student’s Welfare Association, Zillai and the Zomi Sangnaupang Pawlpi have strongly condemned the alleged rape of Hmar women by some cadres of the underground UNLF and KCP in the interior areas of Churachandpur, saying the action perpetrated by the underground cadres were massive violation of basic human rights and dignity of women.
Condemning the alleged indiscriminate planting of landmines by these underground groups in Churachandpur area that have already claimed many lives, permanently maimed and injured and displaced people, these organisation urged government to take steps to clear landmines and award adequate compensations to the victims.
The students bodies also demanded that the National Human Rights Commission and the National Commission for Women be allowed to involved in the probe to find out facts and circumstances leading to the incident.
While welcoming Manipur government’s decision to institute a fact finding enquiry into the alleged mass rape case, the students bodies also demanded that the commission headquarter be stationed at affected area.
In the meantime, expressing strong condemnation to alleged mass rape of Hmar women by the cadres of UNLF and KCP, the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights, Delhi unit has alleged both India government and Manipur government of remaining silent on the issue.
The Naga human rights body also demanded immediate bringing to book of those culprits involved in the mass rape for quick delivery of justice through compensation to the victims and their families and relatives. It also urged both India and Manipur government for necessary remedial measures to rehabilitate those villagers of Churachandpur who have fled to Mizoram and elsewhere for shelter and medical check up.
