Imphal, August 30, 2006: The underground United National Liberation Front, UNLF, has held the security forces responsible for the anti-UG posters reportedly circulating in some areas in the periphery of the valley areas, stating it was part of their propaganda campaign to malign and misrepresent the revolutionary groups. As we all know, more than 21 young girls and women were mass raped and molested in January, 2006 by armed UNLF and KCP militants at Lungthulien, Parbung and adjoining villages of Tipaimukh sub-division in Manipur. After persistent calls by civil society groups to probe the mass rape, the state government of Manipur constituted an independent Judicial Inquiry Commission to be headed by Retired Justice Rajkhowa on March 13, 2006, and to submit the probe’s report by May 17, 2006. Imphal, August 2, 2006: A large number of the displaced Hmar villagers who were taking shelter at Sakawrdai relief camp in Mizoram have returned home with 560 displaced villagers arriving on July 29. These villagers are now looking forward to a new and settled live here in their own ancestral homesteads. More »
