Imphal, August 30, 2006: The underground United National Liberation Front, UNLF, has held the security forces responsible for the anti-UG posters reportedly circulating in some areas in the periphery of the valley areas, stating it was part of their propaganda campaign to malign and misrepresent the revolutionary groups.
In this connection, the UNLF termed the clarification issued by the women`s NGO, Women Action for Development, regarding the use of an unrelated photograph of a rally organised by the WAD against violence against women, as a courageous step which has alerted the public.
Unable to defeat the UNLF/MPA in the field, the Indian security and intelligence services have resorted to various covert and overt moves intended to discredit the UNLF, drive a wedge between it and the public, and to misrepresent it as a terrorist group to the world at large.
One of the covert strategies is to gather allies in the interior areas by offering some transitory benefits, the UNLF said in a statement, citing the use of some hill-based armed groups against the UNLF after concluding suspension of operation agreements with them. The tension among various communities in Manipur has also facilitated this divide and rule policy, the UNLF acknowledged.
The allegations of mass rape and landmine use in Tipaimukh and Parbung areas levelled against the UNLF was part of a strategy to turn the Hmar community against the party, it said, noting that the UNLF`s appeal for an inquiry by an unbiased civil society organisation or by the ICRC had been ignored.
The poster campaign is another such strategy, it said, adding that such a childish campaign would boomerang on the security forces as the fake surrender drama has done.
The group also charged that the Indian intelligence agencies had set off the bomb blast at the ISKCON complex on August 16 in a bid to bring Manipur onto the global map of terrorism.
It also urged the public to be ready to defeat such covert strategies of the Indian forces.
