Imphal, February 12, 2007: Reacting to the news report published in the February 12 issue on the alleged torture of Tuyang villagers by 16 AR, Assam Rifles has strongly refuted the report as false and baseless, saying that the report was aimed at maligning the image of secuirty forces.
A statement issued by the PRO of Hqs IG AR (S) further construed that the wordings of the report indicated rhetoric of one of the UG groups. Reiterating that harassment of villagers is not in the interest of AR, it asserted that it is the aim of AR to provide a safe and secure environment to the public.
Stating that the villagers were forced to grow poppy in the village when it was under UNLF, it informed that AR troops have destroyed the crop since it would be responsible for further degeneration of youth. AR further denied other allegations mentioned in the report as no such incidents took place on ground.
