Imphal, February 16, 2007: The Kuki Movement for Human rights has submitted a memorandum to the Governor Dr SS Sidhu highlighting plight of Kuki villagers in various parts of the State and Chandel district in particularly.
While conveying appreciation to the Indian Army for sanitising Kuki settlement areas from the clutches of underground elements, the body opined that confining villagers in groups is akin to keeping them in ‘concentration camp’. As the villagers’ movement have been restricted to a large extent food stocks stored for a year had been looted and prospect of tending to the fields is impossible as jhum cultivation activities normally takes place in January and February months, added the memorandum.
As possibility of jhum cultivation is bleak thousands of Kuki villagers are gripped with fear of starvation, mentioned the rights body while appealing to the Governor for issuing necessary instructions to the State or Central Government for provision of two years’ ration to mitigate suffering of the villagers.
